# BrightID BrightID is a privacy-first social identity network that allows you to prove to applications that you are accessing them fairly with only one account. Each person holds a BrightID and makes connections with people that know them. A graph is formed with their BrightID and their connections and fake BrightIDs are detected by analyzing the graph. BrightID is a stepping stone to create a fair digital world for all citizens of the world. {% embed url="" %} # Install & be Oriented Install, setup profile, and get to know the app ### Install If you have not installed BrightID mobile app already, please install it: * [AppStore](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/brightid/id1428946820) * Android * [PlayStore](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.brightid) * [APK](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EJIFrf8xPNrES6prB4qYaJogtYwEIKCG) ### Create Profile Unlike other identity verification systems, BrightID does not require or record any personally identifying information from your offline or online life. You do not need to submit your national ID, phone number, date of birth, home address, or biometric data. Nor your email, social media accounts, or blockchain wallets. Here is a post that explains how [BrightID is *not* KYC like the way it is generally known. In many ways, it is an alternative principally opposed to it](https://twitter.com/BrightIDProject/status/1587769127338319872).\ \ All you need is to provide a display picture and a name of your choice, only to facilitate making connections so that people that know you do not get confused. You can even change them at any time as long as your connections recognize you. They are not even recorded in BrightID's network infrastructure. For the sake of your privacy, they are only recorded on your and your close connection's devices and nowhere else on the internet. You share them securely via a peer-to-peer channel when you make connections with your peers and that's it. That means you are as private and [secure](/brightid/install/recover-move) with regards to your digital identity, as the close connections you make and trust. So, please be careful [making connections](/brightid/verifications/making-connections). There are simply no leakage of your personally identifying information from the infrastructure side as there are none of it there. The project takes privacy very seriously.
### Be Oriented The home screen shows your name and picture. Your BrightID verification status is indicated under your name. In the initial condition when you have not received any verification badges, the status below your name will say *'Verifications: none'*. ![](/files/9I4b5q8Z63cNR8TgshZJ) You can see your connections, achievements and apps. The buttons for [making connections](/brightid/verifications/making-connections) are at the bottom. The icons for the menu and notifications are at the top. You will receive notifications for [incoming connection requests](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-process#making-one-to-one-connection), [group invites](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-process#making-group-connections), and alert to setup [recovery](/brightid/install/recover-move).\ \ IMPORTANT: Please make a habit of paying close attention to the notifications and respond accordingly asap.\ \ The menu has features like editing your profile, seeing your achievements, checking for updates, and more. Use the link at the bottom of the screen to join the project's public space managed by the community in our [Discord](https://discord.gg/brightid-596752664906432522). You can ask questions, get support, and be informed on the status of the project and its ecosystem. Any member of the public is also welcome to become a valued member of the community by contributing, and participating in whatever ways they can along with the existing community. The public good is entirely built, maintained, supported, and stewarded by the community and the public. The [BrightDAO](/brightid/brightdao/bright-dao) is also there for you to participate in the governance of matters concerning the public good and its ecosystem of projects. # Update/Upgrade Always keep BrightID mobile app up-to-date with the latest version 1. First find the version you currently have: * Launch BrightID mobile app * Look at the bottom right corner of the home screen (see the picture below) * Note: do not look at the mobile OS setting for "App info" like you may normally do for other apps to find the current version * It is normal for version displayed in PlayStore/AppStore to be behind the version shown in your BrightID mobile app * Most importantly, remember that the version displayed in the BrightID mobile app home screen is the the primary source of truth regarding the version we are concerned with.

2. Note that there can be two kinds of updates released by the community from time to time 1. Occasionally there are the *store* releases. If there is one, go to the store(PlayStore/AppStore), find the app in the store, look for "update" button and click on it to update. 2. More often, updates are made incrementally "Over The Air"(OTA). OTAs are automatic in-app updates. To get them all you have to do is launch the BrightID mobile app from time to time and it will download the update automatically without you having to visit the store. * If you hear about a new update on the project's social media presence, and you launched the app expecting to receive the update, but did not receive the version announced immediately, go to the *Menu -> Check for Updates* to manually trigger the download of the update. NOTES: * Follow and keep an eye on the project's X(formerly twitter) presence as [@BrightIDProject](https://twitter.com/BrightIDProject) or [Discord](https://discord.gg/brightid-596752664906432522) for announcement posts about new updates. * If you have setup [Social Recovery](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery), make sure to ask your [recovery connections](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery#who-should-be-your-recovery-connections) to keep their BrightID app up-to-date. This helps prevent Social Recovery problems. * If you have setup [Device Recovery](/brightid/install/recover-move/device-recovery), make sure to keep your secondary devices up-to-date. This helps prevent Device Recovery problems. # Recover/Move Your digital identity is priceless! Secure your BrightID now! {% hint style="danger" %} ### The password is NOT Recovery The password you set on your profile screen is NOT your recovery. Do NOT rely on it. ### BrightID is NOT a blockchain wallet There is also no seed phrase. BrightID is NOT a blockchain wallet. It is your digital identity to privately assert your uniqueness when fairly accessing web3 properties. As such it does not hold anything of monetary value like the way wallets do. Nevertheless, your digital identity is priceless in a different way. ### You cannot recover if you do not setup recovery first. So, please set it up as soon as you can, especially if you have already received a verification or tried to connect to an app. {% endhint %} ### One or both of the following two procedures can be used to setup and recover, or move your BrightID to a new phone. 1. [**Social Recovery**](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery) is a great way to recover/move if you have three or more close family, friend, colleague, or community kinship who would not mind being your recovery connection. It can be quite effective: * It is not necessary for your recovery connections to have any verification. * It does not cost an extra phone (unlike device recovery). * You can recover or move to new phone even if your old phone became unusable, got lost, or stolen. Unlike device recovery, no need to have the old phone with BrightID around when recovering to new one. #### To set it up follow -> [Social Recovery](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery) 2. [**Device Recovery**](/brightid/install/recover-move/device-recovery) is a great way to move or import your BrightID to a new phone while you still have the old phone with functioning BrightID - without the need for any recovery connections. * It is also a great way to keep backup of your BrightID if you own multiple phones. #### To set it up follow -> [Device Recovery](/brightid/install/recover-move/device-recovery) # Social Recovery Introduction to Social Recovery Social recovery is a process where you can recover your BrightID with consent from close connections you trust and rely upon. ## **Why is it important?** * To regain your BrightID if: * You lose your mobile phone. It got broken, lost, or someone stole it. * The app accidentally becomes corrupted and unusable, or unintentionally gets uninstalled. * To migrate your BrightID to a new phone even if it is functioning perfectly in your old one. * Last but not least, to have strong and stable connections that higher level verification protocols like Aura(under construction) can have something to work with in determining whether it can reflect and have you receive the higher level verification of uniqueness. ## **Who should be your recovery connections?** * The connections must consent to being your recovery connection and mark you as "already known." They must also really know you just as well as you know them. These are people you will never forget, nor they forget you. See also "[Making Connections](/brightid/verifications/making-connections)" section.\ \ A public and well-known person like the connection party host, or a celebrity, is only suitable to be your recovery connection if you really know each other personally. If they do not already know you, which is likely the case for most of us, you will definitely not have their consent to be your recovery connection. * They must be someone you trust not to steal your BrightID. So choose family, friends, colleagues, or kinships you develop in a community(IRL or Virtual) that care about and respect you just as well as you care about and respect them. * They must be reliable to be there for you, as you will need to be able to reach out and contact them every time you need to recover your BrightID. {% hint style="info" %} **NOTE:** * If your recovery connections do not want to bother with receiving verifications, your recovery connections do not have to have a BrightID verification like the "[Meets](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification)"; Only installing the app and keeping it updated is sufficient and necessary. Close family and friends usually care enough and respect you to not mind the responsibility, and they are indeed a popular choice among BrightID holders to rely on them for recovery. * You must select at least three recovery connections to pass [setup](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery/set-it-up). Ideally, around seven recovery connections can make it really secure. Greater the number of stable recovery level connections, the better. * As you will see in [the setup process](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery/set-it-up) next, only two recovery connections are actually needed to be present for the actual [recovery process](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery/recover) at the time when you need to recover. {% endhint %} ## [Next section details social recovery setup](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery/set-it-up) # Set it up! Setup Social Recovery as soon as you receive a verification or earlier Before you start, [connect to at least three people](/brightid/verifications/making-connections) that know, care, and trust you personally, just as well as you know them. Have them [install BrightID](/brightid/install) if needed. * As mentioned in [the introduction](/brightid/install/recover-move), they do not necessarily have to receive any verifications if they do not want to right now. For recovery, two types of information is secured, the first being the most essential, and second optional. 1. **BrightID private key**\ It is secured through a [secret sharing mechanism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamir%27s_secret_sharing) with your recovery connections. This is the main and the most important information that is recovered by social recovery. 2. **Profile data(optional)**\ Your and your connection's names and photos is secured by password and stored peer-to-peer with your contacts locally in mobile phones of everybody you are connected to. Your recovered BrightID can still be functional even if the profile data could not be retrieved during recovery as long as the private key was recovered successfully. ### 1) Securing BrightID private key **Step 1.** Go to Menu on your BrightID app's home screen. ![](/files/1h4sqItsFpg3UM678IxN) **Step 2.** Select "*Recovery Connections*". {% hint style="info" %} ### Listen and follow alerts about recovery If you are new to BrightID, and since Social Recovery is so important, you will continually receive an alert to set it up until it is done. You can also tap the alert message to get to the recovery connections screen. {% endhint %} **Step 3.** Choose your recovery connections from the eligible connection list. The app will show you the list of eligible people for your recovery connection. {% hint style="warning" %} ### The recovery connection eligibility Again, recovery connections are picked from [close connections you make](/brightid/verifications/making-connections), and are meant to help you recover your BrightID. Be careful who you choose because they can take over your BrightID if two of them decide to cooperate against you.\ \ The eligibility criteria for someone to be your recovery connection is that the person should have marked you as '**Already Known,**' and you have marked them as '**Already Known**' as well. Please be sincere about it. Dishonesty could lead you to lose your BrightID. {% endhint %} ![](/files/dIiIF1iTCulfQb6E5d8l) **Step 4.** Click the 'Add' button to confirm your selection. ![](/files/YyZ5SbmNwmByihQUrefH) ### 2) Securing Profile data Set up a password to encrypt and back up profile data consisting of your name and photo and the *names* and *photos* of your connections. You can view or change this password from your profile screen, accessible from the Menu. Even though it is less essential than securing the private key, take measures to secure it; Write it down and keep it safe so you can remember it when needed. ## [Next section details how to update recovery connections](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery/set-it-up/update-recovery-connections) # Update recovery connections Add or update recovery connections Making connections in general is described in detail in "[Making Connections](/brightid/verifications/making-connections)" section. Social life is such that our close relationships changes from time to time. Healthy relationships of interdependence usually lasts longer but situations can change as life moves on. The nature of trust is also such that only the people we trust can betray us. However, not trusting anybody just because of the fear of betrayal is not a healthy way for a social being to live their life. Considering these, it is important to be able to curate and update our trusted connections.\ \ When relationships do change, in BrightID we can change our recovery connections. By: 1. Adding another connection, Or 2. Changing the [connection level](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels) of an existing connection. {% hint style="info" %} ### The Cool-down period For your security, changes to recovery connections will take effect only **after seven days.**\ \ The period is called the cool-down period, and it helps if someone deliberately steals your mobile phone to steal your BrightID by changing your recovery connections. It allows you to recover your BrightID to a new mobile phone before they do.\ \ As will be mentioned again in [the recovery process](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery/recover) in the next section, for security, BrightID on the stolen or old mobile phone automatically becomes invalidated and useless when you recover to a new phone. {% endhint %} ### Adding recovery connection 1. Go to "*Menu"* on your BrightID app's home screen. 2. Select "*Recovery Connections*". 3. Select "*Add more recovery connections*" link at the bottom. 4. Choose the additional recovery connection from the eligible connection list. * Only people you have [made connection](/brightid/verifications/making-connections) *mutually* as "[Already Know](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels#already-know)" are filtered in this list and shown to be suitable for recovery connection. Connections below this level do not show up there. 5. Click the "*Add*" button to confirm your selection. ### Remove or downgrade your existing recovery connection 1. Go to "*Menu"* on your BrightID app's home screen. 2. Select "*Recovery Connections*". 3. Select the blue pencil icon next to the recovery connection you want to remove or downgrade. 4. Change that [connection level](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels) from "Recovery" to "Already Know" or any other [connection level](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels) below that depending upon the changes in trust you feel about the person. 5. Click the "*Save"* button to confirm the change you made. ## [Next section details how to actually recover](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery/recover) # Recover Using Social Recovery to recover your BrightID {% hint style="warning" %} ### Make sure your recovery connection's BrightID is up-to-date Do not proceed further before reading this alert completely and acting on it.\ \ Before starting recovery, make sure your recovery connections have the same version of BrightID as your freshly installed one. * If, for some reason, after updating their BrightID, your recovery connections get an error saying their signing keys are invalid/incorrect, then you cannot recover. * It is very important for you and your recovery connections to keep your BrightID mobile app healthy and keep it up-to-date. Follow us on Twitter at [@BrightIDProject](https://twitter.com/BrightIDProject), so you do not miss these important announcements. #### [Ask your recovery connections to use the Update/Upgrade guide for important details on updating their BrightID.](/brightid/install/update-upgrade) * Proceed further only if both of your recovery connection's BrightIDs are up-to-date and error free. {% endhint %} **Step 1.** [Install BrightId](/brightid/install) on your new mobile phone. Select the “Recover” button on the screen.
**Step 2.** The app will present a QR code and a link. Share the QR code to two of your recovery connections or copy the link to share with them.
**Step 3.** On your recovery connection friend side, after they scan your QR code or after they clicked the link you shared, your friend will see a filtered list of BrightIDs from your connection list. They must carefully identify you and correctly select your BrightID as the BrightID they are helping to recover.
{% hint style="info" %} You will be notified every time one of them scans the code or uses the link. {% endhint %}
**Step 4.** Once two of your recovery connections finish **Step 3**, the app will start downloading your data from your recovery connections. A green check mark will indicate that the downloading process is done.
**Step 5.** Enter your password to restore the profile data. {% hint style="info" %} Recovery is much smoother if you **remember the password,** but if you do not remember it, you may skip it. As mentioned earlier, it is not as essential as recovering your private key for your recovered BrightID to be functional. {% endhint %}
Once all steps are done, you will be taken to your BrightID home screen. Congratulations!
{% hint style="info" %} ### Stolen BrightID gets invalidated upon successful recovery When you recover, BrightID in your old phone becomes invalidated and useless if you or someone still has it. If you still have the old phone, it is safe to uninstall BrightID from it. {% endhint %} # Device Recovery Move your BrightID to a new phone, or use an extra phone as a backup You can move your BrightID from one phone to another as long as you **still have access to the old phone that has your fully functioning BrightID**. This feature also allows the multi-device backup of your BrightID so that if you lose one, you still have your BrightID in another phone. {% hint style="warning" %} ### Make sure BrightID on your old phone is up-to-date Do not proceed further before reading this alert completely and acting on it.\ \ Before starting recovery, make sure the original phone with the fully functioning BrightID has the same version of BrightID as your newly installed one in your new phone. * If, for some reason, after updating, BrightID app in your old phone has an error saying signing keys are invalid/incorrect, then you cannot recover. * It is very important for you to keep your BrightID mobile app in all your phones healthy and kept up-to-date. Then keep all of your devices up-to-date and in sync. #### [Use the Update/Upgrade guide for important details on how to update BrightID on your old phone.](/brightid/install/update-upgrade) * Proceed further only if your BrightID on your old phone is up-to-date and error free. {% endhint %} ### Moving or recovering your BrightID to a new phone **Step 1.** Install the BrightID app on your new phone. After successfully installing, open the BrightID app and select the "Device Recovery" option - previously the button was labeled as "Import".

**Step 2.** After the QR Code appears on the new phone, note the following info: {% hint style="info" %} ### Primary/Secondary device If you are just concerned with completely moving your BrightID to the new phone, select the **"set as primary device"** option above the QR code before you scan the code. Then your old phone BrightID is secondary.\ \ If you want your new device to be a backup or secondary, leave the option unchecked. Then your old phone BrightID remains primary. {% endhint %}
**Step 3.** launch BrightID on your old phone. Select 'Scan a code' and scan the QR Code shown on your new phone. **Step 4.** On your old phone, confirm that you want to export your BrightID to new phone. Then add the name of new phone. E.g., "Main"
**Step 5.** The app on your old phone will start adding your new phone and upload your data to the new phone. The process will take about 15-30 seconds.
**Step 6.** Once the process is done, your old phone will open the 'Devices' page and show the new phone successfully added to the list of devices.
**Step 7.** Have a look at your new phone. Wait for the app on your new phone to download your BrightID data. Once the process is finished, the app will open the home screen and you are done.
{% hint style="danger" %} It is strongly suggested that you double-check the **verification badge, number of connections, achievements,** and **apps linked** on your new phone. If you find some data **fails** to be transferred correctly from one device to another, please report it to us. It will help us notify the bugs on this new feature and solve it.\ \ Assuming you selected "set as primary device" above the QR code on your new phone in the step earlier, your new phone is now the "primary" device, and your old phone is your "secondary" device. {% endhint %} ### Manage the list of Devices To access the information on the list of devices with a copy of your BrightID, you can go to the side menu on your home screen in either phones and select 'Devices.' You can manually re-sync the data from your primary device to your secondary devices on this screen. You can also remove the devices you no longer want. {% hint style="danger" %} "Sync Devices" from your primary phone from time to time, especially if you change something, like your profile pic, name, connection level of a connection, or you added new connections.\ \ While you can still have a functioning BrightID on the phone that is not synced, and you can always redo the changes manually on your secondary/backup phone, it is obviously best not to have to repeat the changes in each device. {% endhint %} # Receive Verifications Receiving verification badges You receive verification badges on your BrightID based on [connections you make](/brightid/verifications/making-connections). The connections are represented in BrightID network infrastructure as an anonymous social graph. It is analyzed through each of the verification protocols listed below to determine which kind of badges your connections represent. Obviously, if you do not have the right kind of connections a protocol seeks, you will not receive the kind of badge that the protocol depends upon. * If you have not received any, the app will say "*Verifications: none*". Furthermore, different [apps](/brightid/connect-to-apps) require you to have different verification badges. So far most of them check if you have the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification). There are so far three kinds of verification protocols, two of which are live ([Meets](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification) and [Bitu](/brightid/verifications/bitu-verification)), and one is under development (Aura). 1. # Meets Verification Seeds, Connection parties and meeting schedules The Meets verification is the first and the most basic verification protocol/mechanism BrightID project has had since the beginning. For a long time it had been the only verification. [Bitu](/brightid/verifications/bitu-verification) and Aura verifications(under construction) are recent developments.\ \ The social identity network that BrightID project set out to build had a cold start problem. The graph needed to be seeded with people and their relations before higher level verifications could be built upon them. No existing social graphs fit the bill at the time when BrightID began, so Meets protocol mechanism was built for the purpose. While BrightID was never meant to settle on the verification protocol, it is still the widely used verification. The characteristic verification parties of the protocol is what most people have gotten to know BrightID by and the perception is up for change in the mid future with Aura.\ \ So far, when any one of the app in [the BrightID app registry](https://apps.brightid.org) asks the public to connect their BrightID, it is checking whether the public has ever received the Meets verification. In that way Meets plays an important role until Aura takes off. It is to be noted again that Meets verification protocol is an exception, and BrightID project has always been meant to enable truly social identity network where one's identity depends upon, and is secured by, one's own close connections. The project has not reached that goal yet, but it should get there with Aura(under construction). ### How Does Meets work? The Meets protocol mechanism works by the member of the public making a connection with one of the special set of people called Hosts. Internally the protocol calls them Seeds. "Seed" actually shows up as a special kind of badge in the Host's BrightID. Anybody that makes a "just met" connection with the host, and the host connects with them mutually, receives the Meets verification.\ \ Only one connection is enough.\ \ In practice, Hosts hold connection parties over zoom in a regular [schedule](https://meet.brightid.org) so that the member of the public can meet and make connection with the host. As to the mechanism of how Hosts or Seeds come about, see the next section on [Seed Groups.](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification/seed-groups) ### What does the public need to do in the meeting? The protocol requires that the member of the public *show* themselves clearly on video. They also need to *listen* carefully and *respond* sensibly if the host asks them to respond. If there is no response, or the response is not sensible, as can happen if the attendee does not understand the language of the meeting, then the host refuses to make connection with them. So, it is important for the member of the public to either attend meeting in the language they understand and speak well, or they need to take a human translator who can help them listen and respond appropriately during the meeting. #### [Meetings are available in select languages.](https://meet.brightid.org) Each meeting begins at the scheduled time and open to join only for 5 minutes. About 73K people have attended a meeting successfully so far.[
](https://meet.brightid.org)\ [Making connection](/brightid/verifications/making-connections) with the host is the same as the process of connecting with one's close connections. Host presents connection QR code over video which can be scanned with one's BrightID mobile app, or alternatively a link is presented that initiates the connection if one is attending the meeting with a mobile phone.\ \ After a successful meeting and connection, it takes about half an hour for the member of the public to receive the Meets verification. It shows up as a badge labeled "Meets" under their profile name in BrightID mobile app. # Seed Groups Community integration The group feature in BrightID represents core members of trusted communities around a niche project bound by common interest, goals, and purposes. #### If you are only interested in receiving the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification), skip this section and ignore the Groups feature in the menu. If you are a core part of a community around a well known and trusted web3 project and you are interested in having members of the public participating in your project receive the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification) through your own community, read on. Worth mentioning here: * If your project has a web3 app and you want to integrate BrightID to allow fair access to your app, check out the [app integration documentation](https://brightid.stoplight.io/). You may also reach out to BrightID project's community in [our public space in Discord](https://discord.gg/brightid-596752664906432522) for integration support. * If your web3 project and community also has a public space in discord, consider using [BrightID unique bot for Discord](https://bot.brightid.org) to fortify your public space against bots, scammers and spammers causing havoc in your public space using multiple discord accounts. So, to try to scale the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification), there has always been a simple but permissioned mechanism for there to be hosts embedded in various communities besides BrightID's own community. The feature gives core members the ability to be trusted agents to have other members of the public participating in their project's goods and services receive the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification) in their own community rather than sending them to BrightID community. In other words, the core members receives the **"Seed status"** just like the hosts in BrightID project community.\ \ However, this ability is permissioned and only given if the group has been trusted, oriented, trained, and approved as BrightID Seed Group by the SeedDAO. SeedDAO members consists of BrightID project initiators and experienced hosts. They are the custodians of this mechanism to ensure the community groups are responsible in the use of the power to help the public receive the Meets verification.\ \ All BrightID hosts conducting connection parties have "Seed" status in exactly the same way and belong to BrightID community's seed groups for select languages. ### Creating a group 1. Open the side menu on your home screen and select 'Groups.' 2. Select the 'Create Group' button. 3. Add group photo and name. 4. That group code is only to facilitate making [several connections](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-process#making-group-connections) at once rather than doing it individually multiple times. This independent feature however, is used by hosts to make connections with multiple members of the public at connection parties. {% endhint %} ### Activate your group into a seed group After creating your group, you can apply for the Seed Group Nomination by filling out the [**Seed Group Nomination Form**](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd5ma8NIyNmOFfgYGOYXC0rQITWSQgLepe1xzIy5dDy5sNXRA/viewform). The SeedDAO members will then assess the application and contact you for further assessments. After the SeedDAO approves your community's group: * The members of the group receives "*Seed status*". It shows up as badge labeled "Seed" in their BrightID app under their profile name. * Any group member with "Seed" badge, can now make "[Just Met](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels#just-met)" connections with members of the public for the public to receive the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification). {% hint style="success" %} Tips: To smoothen the seed group nomination application process, it is suggested that you contact BrightID community on the project's public space in [**Discord**](https://discord.gg/brightid-596752664906432522) to introduce your community and follow up about the application process. {% endhint %} ### Seed group responsibilities To receive verification, members of the public outside the group do not need to join the seed group. They only have to make at least a "Just met" connection to a group member who now has the "*Seed status*". Such [connection making](/brightid/verifications/making-connections) can happen at an event like the BrightID connection parties or real life meetups. #### Reporting: Reporting is done by using the "*Remove this connection*" button in "*Connections*" > "*Connection details*" which brings up the profile screen of the subject. * When a "*Seed status*" holder reports someone in their connections list, the BrightID holder loses the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification), unless 4 other "*Seed status*" holders connect to the holder as just met. * Being reported by a "*Seed status*" holder has 3 negative score and having connection with a "*Seed status*" holder has 1 positive score. * BrightID holder's score should be greater than zero for them to receive the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification). * Flagging a holder as "suspicious" has no negative score, and if the "*Seed status*" holder intends to prevent the issuance of the [Meets verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification) by the protocol, even though they already made a connection, the "*Seed status*" holder should "report" that connection instead. Reporting is useful in these scenarios: * When somebody loses their BrightID without having [setup recovery](/brightid/install/recover-move), they need to report details of their old BrightID to a "*Seed status*" holder so it can be invalidated before them receiving a new one. * Somebody attends multiple meetings with different hosts with intention to create multiple BrightIDs, so all their BrightIDs(but one) need to be invalidated. # Bitu Verification Bitu verification verifies users based on their location in the [BrightID graph](https://explorer.brightid.org/). Users should do certain things to move closer to the main regions of the graph and avoid doing what pushes them away from these regions. There are [three levels of connection](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels) in BrightID that show how well a person knows the others they make connections with: already known, just met, and suspicious. Choosing the right connection level when making a connection is very important in Bitu. To be verified, you need to be located in the main regions of the graph. As the graph is drawn only based on "Already known" connections, so you need to make “Already known” connections with your friends and family who are already placed in the main regions. Note that you must never make an “Already known” connection with someone you do not know because the person may be an attacker, and their expulsion from the main regions of the graph will cause you to be pushed away from the main regions. Bitu assigns a score to users that increases by one every time they make an “Already known” connection to friends or family who are verified in Bitu. Different apps may require different scores to consider users as verified. Bitu also penalizes users that make “Already known” connections to strangers. Users get five negative points when they get reported or are selected as “Suspicious” by others that they made “Already known” connections with. Users also get one negative point when their friends or family with who they have “Already known” connections get penalized. This indirect penalization encourages users to take care of their friends and family’s activity. To prevent being penalized, don't forget to review your connections list as soon as possible and ensure that levels are selected properly for all connections, and update the level if you find an “Already known” connection to someone you just met in connection parties and you do not already know. Your Bitu score and list of connections that penalized you directly/indirectly can be found in the “Bitu verification” screen under the “Achievements” list. There is also a Bitu verification sticker that will appear under your name on the home screen when you get verified in Bitu. You can also find out which of your connections are verified in Bitu by checking if they have that sticker under the names of your connections in their profile screen. [All BrightID verifications](/brightid/verifications) are a reflection of your relationships. If you do not have connections, there is nothing to reflect. So, by adopting BrightID as the public good to help you prove fair access to web3 properties, you are expected to make connections to people that mutually know you. It is also based on the principle that your identity should be attested and secured by people that actually know and care about you rather than some distant and central authority. So, unlike many other identity systems, In BrightID, your digital identity and its [security](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery), is in your own hand in maintaining your trusted relationships. In that way BrightID is only a mirror to help you reflect your identity in a way that is self-sovereign, non-violent, and globally private. It reflects it through the [verifications](/brightid/verifications) in a way [web3 properties](/brightid/connect-to-apps) can deterministically check and see whether they are safe to allow you access to their goods and services. For the baseline rights of fair access, [the apps](/brightid/connect-to-apps) do not need to know anything else about you. ### Guidelines It is very important to be careful when making connections. Here are some guidelines to follow: 1. Make connections only with people you know well or have agreed to get to know. This might include family, friends, or relationships in communities you care about. 2. **Avoid making connections with random people.** Reckless connection-making can expose you to social engineering attacks or loss of privacy. 3. BrightID connection party hosts are an exception. You will need to connect with a host at a connection party in order to receive [the “Meets” verification](/brightid/verifications/meets-verification). 4. Keep in mind that all connections you make are recorded in the BrightID social graph. While the graph is anonymous, and you can remove connections from your connection list, the connection you already made will remain in history in a “forgotten” state in the social graph. 5. Remember that the anonymous social graph is stored in BrightID nodes, but your profile name and photos are only stored locally on your and your connections’ phones. This helps to protect your personal information. **IMPORTANT**: You will need *at least* three connections to close, trusted, and reliable people in your life to setup Social Recovery. More, trusted connections you make, the better the security. So do not settle on just three. Seven recovery connections is ideal. The [Social Recovery doc](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery) also has the section titled [***"Who should be your recovery connections?"***](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery#who-should-be-your-recovery-connections). The next section describes the details of the connection process. # Connection process ### Making one-to-one connection Use the buttons on the bottom of the home screen to start making connections. One person shows a QR code for the other one to scan. The corresponding profile data will then be exchanged through a secure p2p channel. They will then select the level of connections based on how much they know each other. It might be “already known”, “just met”, or “suspicious”. "Already known" being the desirable one for the verification protocols and security mechanism in BrightID. ### Making group connections If a close-knit group of people want to make connections at the same time, it is more convenient to make a group connection in which one person shows a QR code and everyone else scans it, so that everyone gets connected to each other. ![](/files/9Me5xUBNjQfh5rhcFBfz) To make a group connection, remember to change the “single-use” QR to a “group code” with the button on top. You will get notified each time someone scans the code. This code can be scanned by up to 30 people.
Share your QR code as a link with your friends
Connections can also be initiated as links using the “copy link” button. Each QR code or link is valid for 15 minutes. What matters the most is selecting the right connection levels described in the next section. # Connection Levels Curating your close relationships The rule of thumb to follow as already described in the [Guidelines](/brightid/verifications/making-connections#guidelines) is simply not to make connection with random strangers that do not really know or care about you, or you them. Do not consent to such connection requests. BrightID as social identity network is not like other social networks where you follow anybody or anybody can follow you without mutual consent. In BrightID, always curate your connections carefully. As described in the guidelines, these mutual connections are stored anonymously in the social graph forever and there are risks to making untrusted connections. If you have not read the [Guidelines](/brightid/verifications/making-connections#guidelines), please read them again. Having established that, there are 4 levels of connections in BrightID. ### Already know These are people you know well enough to trust them. This might include family, friends, workplace colleagues, or people in communities that you care about. Close connections you develop in online communities can also be trust worthy and inter-dependable. It depends upon the level of kinship and trust you feel with each other which can only develop as you do things together over a considerable period of time regardless of whether it is in real life or online. > ### Recovery > > This is a special connection level visible and settable only if you have connections with "Already Know" connection level. These are highly dependable people that can be your [recovery connection](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery#who-should-be-your-recovery-connections) for [Social recovery](/brightid/install/recover-move/social-recovery) of your BrightID. ### Just met Sometimes there are people you just met in real life or online, and you would like for them to get to know you as you get to know them. They could turn into a close trusted connection, an inter-dependable friendship, as you do things together over a considerable period of time. Or they could just as well remain strangers, or someone you do not trust. So, use this connection level carefully. ### Suspicious Sometimes we are wrong about people we just met. The initial spark of connection you felt withers, and you may find yourself wishing you never consented to make the connection. In this case, change the connection level below "Just met" and set it to "Suspicious" or just remove them from your connection list. {% hint style="info" %} You can also remove connections you do not want to see in your connections screen. However the anonymous connection between you and the person remains forever in the BrightID social graph. {% endhint %} So, it is critical that you curate your relationships with utmost honesty and care. Your curation and labeling helps verification protocols revoke duplicate BrightIDs and strengthen the social identity network of unique digital citizens. Sophisticated and higher lever verification protocols rely on the connection level you set. It helps to keep out agents that try to ruin and deplete the value of web3 by using multiple accounts to unfairly extract more than their share of value. The next section provides more context to fair access from the perspective of the public as well as the web3 properties accessible as apps. # Connect to Apps Enjoy fair and baseline rights of access to web3 properties ### The Internet of value Web3 is often described as the internet of value flow compared to the internet up till now being the internet of information flow. Web3 properties on the internet, more often than not have some form of tokenized and tangible value to guard against unfair access.\ \ That is where BrightID's value lies. There is much more at stake in web3, and BrightID helps these properties, which are accessible as internet applications to all internet citizens worldwide, guard themselves against unfair access.\ \ Just as much as the members of the worldwide public, the internet citizens, need to have fair access to web3 properties like quadratic funding projects such as Gitcoin and CLR.fund; Universal dividends disbursal projects like Unitap; And UBI projects like Manna; These projects also need to ensure that the public is accessing the goods and services they make available, fairly. They need to ensure that the value they make available is not abused and undermined using multiple accounts. Else, they would not function well or sustain. ### Connecting Once you receive [verifications](/brightid/verifications) on your BrightID, you can connect your BrightID to an app so that they can check what verifications you have and allow fair and baseline rights of access by: * Scanning a QR code or using a link that is presented by the app. * This will automatically open the apps screen on your BrightID and ask for your confirmation. * The app will also recognize your BrightID after you confirm. For the sake of your privacy, none of your personally identifying information like name, profile picture, and your connection data is shared with the apps. They will only be able to tell whether you have the verification they are seeking, and that is enough. In that way, [BrightID is not KYC like the way it is generally known](https://twitter.com/BrightIDProject/status/1587769127338319872). ### Sponsorships You need to have your BrightID sponsored *once* and only once by at least one app for it to be functional across all apps. So most apps, if it is the first app you connect with your BrightID, will also sponsor you in the background. ### [Check out these apps](https://apps.brightid.org) # FAQ Answers to frequently-asked questions ### How do I unlink an app from my BrightID? To protect against sybil attacks, apps don't allow you to unlink an account you made with them. Most apps will allow you to link more than one account to the same BrightID, so the answer is usually to link again with a new account. Talk to support for the app. ### **Where is** BrightID useful? BrightID can be used for: * Universal Basic Income * Voting / Polling * E-commerce However, new use cases are being discovered by the community every day. ### **How is BrightID different from other identity solutions?** BrightID is a solution for knowing whether someone exists in a system only once. It is specifically designed to work well in a digital environment. BrightID can solve a problem that is difficult for other identity solutions: the problem of unique identity. It does so in a way that doesn’t require personal data to be collected or attested by others. ### **Why doesn’t BrightID use biometrics?** Biometrics (fingerprints, retina scans) are useful for determining whether someone belongs to a set of known people. They aren’t useful for stopping an attacker from creating duplicate identities–unless the test is administered by a trusted third party. BrightID uses relationships between close friends and relatives to verify unique personhood. A third party may choose to use biometrics in conjunction with BrightID. ### **Does BrightID use facial recognition?** In order to stop an attacker from making duplicate identities, an AI would have to be able to recognize all attempts to alter or disguise one’s face. This is beyond the capability of an artificial intelligence for the foreseeable future. BrightID uses trusted relationships between people to verify its users. This includes people’s ability to recognize someone in person using all available information, including recognizing their face. A real person’s ability to recognize another person far surpasses that of an AI. Your name and photo exist to allow your connections to identify you and are not stored or used by BrightID outside of your and their devices.\

If you have already set up your BrightID and got it verified, you could skip 1, 2 and 3. [User Tutorial](https://brightid.gitbook.io/brightid/begin-your-journey-here) also helps you with those steps. Provide your ethereum address in step 4. You could either use the "Load From Metamask" button or paste the address manually in the provided bar. ![](/files/-MENViaUzxR1m9QNDait) Once you provide your ethereum address, a QR code will be shown in step 5. Scan the QR code with your smartphone or use the deep link to add your ethereum address to your BrightID. \ \ Your Eidi supply will be sent to your wallet shortly. You can check your supply in your metamask. Make sure to set your network to IDChain.\ \ Each Eidi will support thousands of transactions. # Getting Started [BrightID explorer](https://explorer.brightid.org/) enables users to explore the BrightID graph. Nodes represent people in the BrightID graph and connections they make with each other represent links. The default view of the graph is drawn using links that represent mutual connections with “Already known” or “Recovery” [levels](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels). Connections that are one-sided or have “Just met” or “Suspicious” [levels](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels) are ignored in the default view because they don’t represent real social relationships and aren’t useful for Sybil detection methods based on these relationships. Links are colored based on [connection levels](/brightid/verifications/making-connections/connection-levels). “Already known” connections are orange and “Recovery” connections are blue. When different sides of a connection have different levels, colors of arrows on the links can help to find out the level of each side. ![](/files/8U2kqPumzy9iPqGVTdCE) Nodes are colored based on their [verification](/brightid/verifications) status. Verified nodes are blue and not verified ones are orange. Different verifications can be selected from the top menu. Most verifications assign scores to users and nodes’ size is based on their score. Statistics on the number of users that achieved each verification can be found under the “Statistics” section of the left side menu. ![](/files/ZHnzZYDDYeAjK5NMIDwt) # Finding Your Node To find your node in the BrightID graph, you need to log in to the explorer with your BrightID. This can be done by scanning the QR code that is shown on the explorer using your BrightID mobile application and adding the explorer to the devices list. When you log in to the explorer, your node gets selected automatically and the view of the graph zooms on your node. Your own and your connections’ photos are shown on corresponding graph nodes. You can also find the names of your connections in the top menu and select them to find their locations in the graph and their detailed information in the left menu. # Finding More About Users Details about users can be seen by clicking on their nodes and selecting them. A user can also be found and selected by searching its BrightID in the top menu. Clicking on the background unselects nodes. Selecting a node highlights it along with its links and neighbors. A panel will also open on the left side when a node is selected that shows different information about the corresponding user including its BrightID, the creation time, list of achieved verifications, list of connections with details about level, time, and history of them, and list of groups. ![](/files/5DtcdmFLfHts758mUYPN) For each connection under the “Connections” combo box, you can find some useful information. The first item is BrightID of the connection or its name if it’s available. There is a “\*” in front of connections that are seeds. The second and third items indicate connection levels from the selected node to the connection and from the connection to the selected node respectively. “R”, “A”, “J” and “S” represent “Recovery”, “Already known”, “Just met” and “Suspicious” respectively, and “Reported” has no abbreviation. The last items are times of connections in the same order as levels. There is a single time if both sides of the connection are created at the same time. Users can make connections several times in BrightID. A new connection is also created when users update the levels of their connections. The history of connections can be found under the “Connection History” combo box. The second item of each row is “in” for inbound connections of the selected user and “out” for outbound connections. ![](/files/gM3GYmQW8TYKdiwXvF7a) There is also a “Connections” table that provides statistics about the number of connections that selected user has with different levels. **What are “Filtered” connections?** “Already known” or “Recovery” connections that are made in BrightID meets are filtered if they had no history before the meet because users generally do not “already know” others they “just met” in meets. If a connection is wrongly filtered and users already know each other, they can remove the filter by making a mutual connection to each other after the meet. # Finding Seed Groups BrightID has a [“Seed DAO”](https://aragon.idchain.one/#/seeddao) that grants seed status to groups that represent highly trusted and publicly known communities. Seed groups are listed in the top menu. Selecting a seed group highlights its members in blue and their connections in orange. Group members and their connections will get listed under the “Group” section of the left menu when a seed group is selected. Seed groups are assigned a quota that defines the number of users they can assign “SeedConnected” verification. Total assigned and remaining amounts are also available in this section. A sub-graph that is created from only group members and their connections can also be viewed using the “Sub-graph” button. To return back from the sub-graph to the complete graph, the “Reset” button on the top menu can be used. To find out more statistics about seed groups and their activity, visit [“Seed Dashboard”](https://explorer.brightid.org/seeds/) which provides more details in charts and grids. ![](/files/Vkga9T2gv8lHN2iXKZNQ) # Viewing Users Activity in a Period Users’ activity in a specific period can be visualized using the “Users Activity Illustrator.” When “From” and “To” times are selected, the play button can be pressed to start viewing connections that are made in each period one step at a time. The period is a day if “From” and “To” are different days, and an hour or a minute if “From” and “To” have the same day or hour. The playing speed can be slowed down by increasing “Delay between steps.” A sub-graph that is created from only those connections made in the defined period can also be viewed using the “Sub-graph” button. Tu estado de verificación de BrightID se indicará debajo de tu nombre. Pueden ser de personas que ya conoces, o de otras que acabas de conocer. Pero ten cuidado, también puede haber conexiones de personas sospechosas. ![](/files/T0WaYO5Oob9KpNTqLCHh) Si has tenido interacciones con la persona en cuestión en el mundo real y/o en Internet, selecciónala como conexión "ya conocida". Por otro lado, si conoces a alguien sólo por usar BrightID y/o sus aplicaciones integradas, selecciona "recién conocido". Las conexiones de personas distintas a las descritas anteriormente se consideran "sospechosas" y tendrás la oportunidad de informar sobre dichas personas o ignorarlas posteriormente. Seleccionar el nivel de conexión correcto es fundamental cuando se establece una conexión con cada persona. Tus selecciones ayudan a los algoritmos a detectar cuentas falsas con una mayor probabilidad de éxito. Muchos algoritmos de verificación se basan en las conexiones con personas que ya conoces más que con las conexiones con personas que acabas de conocer. Establecer conexiones con tus familiares y amigos te ayuda a alcanzar el estado de “verificado” más fácilmente que otros niveles de conexión, pero nunca selecciones “ya conocido” con personas que no conoces o que acabas de conocer porque eso podría comprometer tu proceso de verificación. ![](/files/oDAcaD7RYxNUaLIv0Svq) Algunos algoritmos pueden tomar como una mala señal si tus conexiones ya conocidas te consideran como alguien que acaban de conocer o una conexión sospechosa. Hay diferentes niveles de verificación en BrightID. El primer nivel de verificación se consigue uniéndose a una [**reunión de verificación**](http://meet.brightid.org/) y siguiendo las instrucciones que proporcionarán los anfitriones en dicha reunión. Pero eso es sólo el principio. Seguir y completar la lista de logros te ayudará a alcanzar mayores niveles de verificación. # Vinculación de aplicaciones Disfrutando de las ventajas de tu identidad única Las aplicaciones utilizan BrightID para mantener alejadas las cuentas falsas y asegurarse de que tú puedas aprovechar al máximo tu identidad única. En primer lugar, debes estar verificado en cada aplicación para poder empezar a utilizarlas. \ Una vez estés verificado en cada aplicación, podrás vincularla a tu BrightID escaneando un código QR o utilizando el enlace que proporciona la página de dicha aplicación. Esto abrirá automáticamente la página de la aplicación en BrightID y te pedirá tu confirmación. La aplicación también reconocerá tu BrightID. Después de dicha confirmación. Recuerda que no se compartirá ningún tipo de información con las aplicaciones, sólo se les informará de tu estado actual de verificación para poder usarlas. Es necesario que al menos una de las aplicaciones haya verificado mediante patrocinio tu BrightID una vez, esto con el objetivo de utilizar todas las aplicaciones de por vida. Envía el código QR de recuperación a tus dos conexiones de recuperación o comparte con ellos el enlace de verificación. Luego de eso, tus amigos verán una lista y podrán seleccionarte como el usuario que están ayudando a recuperar. Recibirás una notificación cada vez que uno de ellos escanee el código o utilice el enlace. Una vez que dos de tus conexiones de recuperación lo hagan, una nueva pantalla te pedirá que introduzcas tu contraseña.
